Pesky bee!
—Duck

Duck is a dark green duck puppet and one of the main protagonists of Don't Hug Me I'm Scared along with Red Guy and Yellow Guy. He is voiced by Baker Terry and had a lightly auto-tuned voice until the TV series.

Before his official name was revealed, it was unknown what kind of bird he was, but he was commonly assumed by fans to be a duck, and nicknamed "Robin", "Birdman", "Bird Puppet" and "Crowe". However, in the 4th episode - when Red Guy stumbles upon the crude remake of the first episode - he is represented by a living duck. It was finally confirmed by CGI Designer Jack Sachs that he is indeed a duck.[2]

Much like the other protagonists, his real name is unknown, with "Duck" merely being a descriptor. However, one of the mysterious symbols is used to represent his name in Friendship.

Appearance[]

He is an anthropomorphic dark green bird resembling a mallard duck with a wide yellow beak and yellow legs with webbed feet, wearing a brown tweed blazer with a red handkerchief in the left breast pocket. From the second episode and on, he wears brown corduroy shorts. He didn't wear any trousers in the first Don't Hug Me I'm Scared episode, however. He owns a pair of glasses and a hat, although he is never seen wearing them, and a blue overcoat which he wears to go outside.

Personality[]

He seems to be the second most intelligent out of the trio, capable of forming complex ideas about the concept of time. However, his intelligence seems to vary between episodes, for example, he mistakes a butterfly for a "pesky bee" in Episode 3. He is also very talkative, arguably the most talkative among the three friends.

He appears to enjoy eating (raw) chicken and eggs, even though he is a duck. He also appears to be interested in technology, as seen in the second and fourth episode and also in fashion as he is rather neatly dressed and by his interest in the digital style in Episode 4.

In Episode 4, he seems shocked when Colin mentions the word "time", which might hint to him having Chronophobia after the events that took place in Episode 2. This is further evidenced in the interview[3] with It's Nice That, where after he was asked 'what happened after the olden days?' he replied 'Time! Time! Time! Time!'.

He can be considered critical as he questioned the idea of time in Episode 2 and rejected the ideas of The Healthy Band in Episode 5. He also seems to be the most arrogant and self-absorbed of the group as seen in Wakey Wakey when he called their sad house and Yellow Guy's birthday buckles "rubbish".

In Episode 5 he becomes more and more annoyed and suspicious of the teachers saying, "Something is wrong" and eventually grows tired of it all and runs away.

Duck seems to be the only professional 'actor' as he is shown to over dramatize things and speak in a slightly exaggerated tone, as if reading from a script. This theory is further proved as he attempts to leave the set in Episode 5.

Duck talking to Duncan

Get away from me, Duncan!

Although Duck has proven to be the smart one among the protagonists, in the television series he is someone with an ego out of sync with reality, who believes that he is superior to others and, sometimes, is the first to insult his friends. He demands to be respected, and has a strange set of rules in his head that he expects the world to follow.[4]

Story[]

Web series[]

Duck has the role of being part of the main characters and contributing to learning in each episode of Don't Hug Me I'm Scared.

BirdAging

Duck during the decomposition period.

Duck and the others learned about creativity with a sketchbook in Episode 1. Tony the Talking Clock was to blame for Duck and his friends' accelerated aging to the point of decomposition in Episode 2.

He goes on a picnic with his friends in Episode three where exclusively raw chicken and eggs are eaten, despite him being a duck. When Yellow guy goes missing, he is reluctant to search for him but goes with Red Guy at the end of the Episode to surprise his friend with the last boiled egg. This gesture is quickly squashed when Duck squats the bug inside of the egg and calls it a 'pesky bee', one of his most memorable quotes.

Confused

Duck and Red Guy at the picnic.

Duck is further tormented by Colin the computer in Episode 4 when subjected to high simulation to the point of torture but, like Yellow Guy, appears to be unaffected.

When Red Guy leaves the 'show' for Episode 5, Duck is the first to realize something is wrong and attempts to contact him through the red phone in the kitchen setting. He attempts to escape the show in the same episode but is put under anesthetic and wakes up tied to a surgeon table. His organs are forcefully removed and tasted by a large can. These organs, once in cans are forced to be eaten by his friend Yellow Guy.

At the end of the 6th episode, he appears to be taking Yellow Guy's place in the 2nd episode (saying the line "Fish on my tray(?)!" while holding a tray with fish on it). He can also be seen as a digital block from the 4th episode when teachers start to appear uncontrollably. When Red Guy alters the timeline, Duck is appeared alive again at the table, this time, he is his favorite colour, and, like the rest of his friends, now has freedom, and has never died.

Death[]

Duck's phrase in this intro is "I'm a talking crow like thing" probably as a reference to some fans believing he was one before Episode 4 of the YouTube series.

At the start of the episode is seen reading ne newspaper "OPINOIN" that talks about the power surge and blackout from Electricity insinuating that this episode takes place after that. Duck reads in the newspaper that he is "Definitely dead" because he forgot to drink water. Despite the seemingly upsetting news of his "death", Duck seems genuinely happy to be dead, believing that it's something he's always deserved. Red Guy wonders if he and Yellow Guy are also dead like Duck.

Red Guy argues on his armchair with Duck for a while until Duck gets up from his rocking chair and then an organ of his falls to the ground, Duck looks down and his friends comment on the organ as the latter moves forward. The organ comes to life, becoming a talking coffin that greets the main characters. Duck is stumped. The talking coffin carries out a conversation about which of the main characters is dead, and then deduces that Yellow Guy is the one who is dead, however, Duck corrects him and says that he is the one who is dead. After Coffin misguesses who of them is death Duck tells him that he is the one who's dead and receives a funerary wreath. To prove he's actually dead, Coffin chop one of Duck's fingers expelling some kind of vapor.

Duck asks what happens next and Coffins mentions that because he didn't saw any money in Ducks record he was put down for a basic funerary service. After that Coffin mentions that they've got a lot of work to do and the song We Gotta Get Things Ready starts in which Duck only mentions dressing up smart, wearing smart shoes, figuring out which tie to choose and ironing his socks.

In the funeral Duck thanks Red and Yellow guy for coming and tells them that he had his insides removed. Coffin immediately tells him he shouldn't be talking because he's dead and Duck apologizes. Afterwards, Duck says that the Coffin's name is David and that that's why that name was engraved in the gravestone, then asks Coffin to change it to his name and then suggesting to write David's name on him.

Then, Duck has a small argument with Red guy about him being his best friend and tells him that he's leaving him all his stuff (including the broken plates from the Electricity episode) which in reality are their stuff with the exemption of Duck's diary (which is new so doesn't have nothing in it). Duck rejects Yellow Guy from making the lovely remarks because "He wants his best friend to do them". During the lovely remarks he insists Red guy to "tell them about the tournament" and then asking Coffin if he won a tournament.

Afterwards, Coffin shows some of "David's best moments" (referring to Duck) and Yellow guy says he didn't did any of that. After the video Duck tries to go home with the other guys but Coffin stops him reminding him that he is dead and telling him to get back inside. Then Duck and Coffin get lowered into the ground giving an end to the funeral. (In episode 2 of the tv series when they show pictures of duck on his gravestone we see a photo of him in a plane, this is most likely how duck actually died in the show from dehydration since it is believed he was stranded after crashing his plane (the one he was flying) into a island and then died from dehydration this is a theory but is most likely how the coffin even knew somebody died without even saying a specific name until duck said that he was the one dead)

Trivia[]

  • He was confirmed to be a duck by Jack Sachs on Instagram.[2]
    • Printed Pictures Magazine also lists him as "Duck," which can be seen if you click on the "Select" button. [1]
  • He is frowned upon by Tony the Talking Clock more so than the other puppets for questioning the idea of time. He is also frowned upon by The Healthy Band for questioning their ideas of health.
  • His head is on Becky Sloan's Twitter account along with Becky, Red Guy's head and a full-bodied Yellow Guy.
  • In Don't Hug Me I'm Scared, Duck was shown with short legs. From the second episode and on, his legs are longer and he’s almost as tall as Yellow Guy.
  • Duck was the only one of the three protagonists to die in an episode.
  • In Don't Hug Me I'm Scared 3, he, alongside Red Guy, can be seen amongst the crowd when Yellow Guy is being subdued into Shrignold’s cult. It’s unknown why the two of them appear, but it could possibly be because Yellow Guy was imagining himself with everyone he loves.
  • In Don't Hug Me I'm Scared 4, he has four creepy variations.
    • He also appears with one eye and no head.
  • In Don't Hug Me I'm Scared 3, Duck shows his hatred for insects. Although, he always refers to them as “Pesky Bee”, even though none of the insects he killed were actually Bees.
  • It appears that he wears glasses. They are first shown in Don't Hug Me I'm Scared 4, next to him on the table, and then shown on the nightstand next to his bed in Don't Hug Me I'm Scared 6.
    • It is unknown why he needs to wear glasses, as it appears that he can see perfectly without them. It could be possible that those are his reading glasses, however.
    • He doesn't wear glasses in the TV series, even when he's reading a newspaper.
  • The puppets were in an exclusive interview[3] with It's Nice That. Duck’s answers to the questions were the following:
    • He states he likes to eat Pineapple fritters, waffles, miniature pancakes, a chicken picnic, bread lengths and whipped milk.
    • He states that his favourite colour is "Once in a while." (However, in the first Don't Hug Me I'm Scared, it is stated that his favorite colour is red.)
    • He's allergic to "Some string and three hammers".
    • He finds yogurt exciting.
    • He's scared of Planet Hollywood.
    • One of his hobbies is weaving.
    • He dreams of "Dog Leather, all kinds of leather."
    • His favourite song is "Douglas the Silly Train by Zim Spiegleman Jr."
    • He loves anyone who loves him back.
  • It is currently unknown as to why Duck’s voice is auto tuned.
    • Although, it's not auto-tuned all of the time. It's absent in the third and fourth episodes of the web series, and he does not have it for all of the episodes of the TV series except Electricity, where it returns as he's playing the guitar. The electricity from it surges, and his eyes flash and glow for a couple of seconds.
  • Most people think Duck is the oldest out of the protagonists.
  • A common joke amongst fans is that Duck was actually killed because he’s green, as the first episode states that "Green Is Not a Creative Colour."
  • Duck is the one that had the worst aging in DHMIS 2, as his flesh decays and his eye falls out, instead of just getting older or having his hair get long and gray.
  • In "Death", Coffin, Tissue Box, and the Mourners claim Duck’s name is "David". However, Red Guy and Yellow Guy acknowledge to all three of these characters how David is not his name.
  • In "Friendship", there's a symbol on Colin's keyboard that apparently represents Duck's name.
  • In "Jobs", when Duck opens the card for Yellow Guy's 40th year working at Peterson's And Sons And Friends Bits & Parts Limited, you can see his name etched into it, on the left page near the top.
  • In the episode Friendship, it is revealed that Duck has gouging tools.
  • In "Electricity", it is stated that Duck has diabetes.
  • Duck has the greatest propensity for violence and the highest kill count of any character. He has killed at least 5 characters: he swatted Picnic Butterfly and Caterpillar in Don't Hug Me I'm Scared 3, bludgeoned Stain Edwards with a shovel in Death, burned alive one of the Bread Children using a toaster in Family, and skewered Warren the Eagle with his "gouging tool" in Friendship. Furthermore, according to "the worm" in his brain, the "documents" he has been forging have led to "many deaths". His Bigger Boys version also seems to enjoy torturing Experiment with electric shocks in Electricity.
    • Duck has himself been killed several times and more than any other character, including in Don't Hug Me I'm Scared 2 - TIME (prematurely aged), Don't Hug Me I'm Scared 5 (eviscerated) and, according to the newspaper in Death, he was "definitely dead" (forgot to drink water).
    • Compare with Yellow Guy, who has killed twice (he was tricked by Steak and Spinach Can into eating Duck's internal organs in Don't Hug Me I'm Scared 5, and then destroyed Coffin to save Duck from being buried alive in Death), while Red Guy may have inadvertently killed just once (the Transport Man, by stuffing raisins in his mouth causing him to choke and die in Transport). Tony the Talking Clock has three kills - the highest of any teacher - he apparently killed Yellow Guy, Red Guy and Duck in DHMIS 2, but denied responsibility for their deaths, stating "it's out of my hands, I'm only a clock", so it could be argued that the Clock merely accelerated the natural aging process and did not directly kill anyone.
